In January 1998, a storm off the coast of Japan began moving eastward across the Pacific Ocean toward Hawaii's North Shore, producing monster waves that thrilled surfers but prompted the Coast Guard to declare a CONDITION BLACK, wherein all access to the water is denied. Defying the ban, a group of rebel surfers decided to seize the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ride the 40-foot waves but soon encountered some of the most extreme--and dangerous--weather conditions imaginable. This episode of PBS' award-winning NATURE series documents the surfers' death-defying experiences through personal interviews ocean extreme sports and action footage (some of which was captured with IMAX cameras), resulting in an incredible expose of the extent of Mother Nature's power.
